Today’s Song:

Shadow Stabbing by CAKE

Sung in a monotone yet enjoyable voice is CAKE’s Shadow Stabbing. With catchy lyrics and feel good beat this song is a great summer listen. It’s off of their 2004 album Comfort Eagle along with their most popular hit Short Skirt/Long Jacket. It has their classic horns along with bizarrely tuned guitars.

Devil Inside

Today’s Song:

Devil Inside by INXS

An excellent song by the 80’s new wave rock group INXS, it is one of my favorite songs by them. The song starts off with a catchy drum rhythm and leads into the lyrics by adding each instrument one at a time. Michael Hutchence’s voice is simply amazing, singing whisper like in this particular song; he was an amazing singer/songwriter who tragically died by hanging himself although it is thought it is thought to have been caused by an autoerotic asphyxiation. The lyrics are insightful and wonderfully written by Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farriss. The video is quite nice too,  http://youtube.com/watch?v=luobOzreRq4 although Guitarist and saxophone player Kirk Pengilly stated in an interview that he did not like the music video for “Devil Inside,” because he thought that it was “too American.” Random fact: This song was used in the movie rockstar. Enjoy this song and I’m sure you will see me write more on INXS.

Six Stringed Devil

So on my recent exploits to Kohl’s, I’ve noticed quite a disturbing trend in their latest posters for the moderately priced summer attire. As I was leafing through the massive racks of printed and/or novelty tee’s, I looked up to see a rather angsty-looking teen with some sort of gay-emo-fohawk-weirdo peakcokshit hair-do holding a Fender Telecaster. So I looked at this in horror for about fourteen second s before realizing that every poster of every teen had some sort of either bass, guitar, or drum set featured almost above the clothing these statuesque teens were wearing. Immediately began to feel angry and wanting to break some type of shit that was close and easily destroyed, but I calmed down, and analyzed the situation instead. WHY were these kids holding these things in the first place? So, I began to run through some options.
1): Perhaps fender and Kohl’s was getting paid big bucks be fender to feature their instruments in their adds as a quite direct way to display their instruments to young teens.
2): Perhaps there was a new Kohl’s brand line of clothing based around music and stuff; perhaps new band and/or guitar company oriented tee’s (which I thought was the case) .

Turns out both were horribly wrong.

So I stroll over to the girls clothes and- OMFGWTFBBQ0×0x0×0x0r~ss!! The girls are all holding the too!!! Wait a minute…..This girl is wearing a sort of dressy top, and a knee length, very classy floral patterned skirt….SO WHY THE HELL IS SHE HOLDING A GIBSON FLYING V!!!!!!! And why are these other girls (also dressed in nice clothes(did I forget to to mention these posters are located in the girl’s dress clothes section?)) holding guitar’s too???? The brand names on the headstocks were even photoshopped out… So why the instruments at all? even thought they did have some new band tee’s in stock, the reason for the new guitar posters were clear: owning a guitar makes you cool. If you have a guitar, that must mean you’re in a band, and that also makes you cool, and a rockstar!!! Who wouldn’t want to be a rockstar!!! I know I would.

With items on the market now, like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and things of that nature, being a rockstar has been closer than ever. After playing these games, Kids go to guitar center and pick up $90 dollar guitars, which the begin to learn “E’ and “Am” chords on, instantly making them guitarists, and the ability to say to people, “yeah, I pretty much play guitar. not gonna lie.”
Unfortunately for people who actually play guitar, guitar center is now full of those kids trying out their brand new E chords and clogging up the place with polluted sounds. Here’s a little tid bit. Look at the number of guitars sold under $100. http://www.musictrades.com/census.htmlNow, anyone who says they “play guitar” is probably lying, but what about those who know what they’re doing? Oh well for them I suppose. If you wanna be cool, buy a squire and learn three chords. everyone is doing it.

*This was written by my friend (obviously a guitarist)
